Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
— 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
One of the most dangerous weapons against the devil is a believer who understands their identity in Christ. One reason Satan sponsors false doctrines to pollute believers is that he does not want us to know the truth of our identity in Christ. He understands that a believer ignorant of his privileges will be unproductive and unfruitful in his assignment.
Some believe that we are just sinners saved by grace. They have the mindset that the believer is still a sinner who cannot help but sin. They may seem humble in their statement, but this is not the believer’s true identity. When we believe such lies, it makes us continue to walk in sin. However, when a believer becomes enlightened that he/she is a new creation, one who is indwelled by the Holy Spirit, it will affect how we live our lives. When we understand that we have been given the righteousness of God, it will make us walk in righteousness. This is how knowing our identity affects our conduct.
Others believe that the believer is powerless and at the mercy of Satan. They don’t believe that we have authority in Christ. This also is a false doctrine that pollutes the believer’s understanding of his identity. This is why we must personally search the Scriptures. When we study the Word, we will find out our true identity and it will enable us to walk in it. It is the Word of God that delivers to us the reality of our inheritance in Christ. This is why Paul said:
Now I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.
— Acts 20:32 (NIV)
Prayer:
Thank you, Father, for all you have made me in Christ Jesus. As I give myself to the Word, may my eyes be opened to my identity in Christ.
